How to Lose Weight Safely

You can learn how to lose weight safely by tuning into what your body really needs and eating food you love. There is no need to follow strict diets or replace meals with powders, safe weight loss is about allowing your weight to reduce naturally.

The following information, courtesy of the Eating Disorders Foundation of Victoria, clearly explains the dangers of dieting for weight loss:

Research has shown that the traditional dieting approach of restricting both calories and food types shows poor results in achieving long-term weight loss.

Within five years, many dieters regain any weight they lose and often end up heavier than when they began.

They also tend to develop very unhealthy attitudes towards food and to lose their natural ability to recognise when they are hungry or full."

Instead of going on a diet, restricting calories or taking meal replacements use the following strategies as a guide on how to lose weight safely:

  • Identify your real physical hunger and tune into what your body needs. Is it food or something else?
  • What food would provide fuel to your body right now?
  • Decide on the quality of food you eat. Is it natural, organic, free of chemical additives, the label ingredients are recognisable as real ingredients and it is minimally processed.
  •  Eat real food, not processed or diet food. You will be satisfied longer.
  • How fresh is the food you eat? Where did it come from? Has it travelled a long distance? Consider supporting local organic growers as much as possible.
